Entergy Returns Indian Point 3 Nuclear Power Plant to Service

Buchanan – Control room operators returned the Indian Point 3 nuclear power plant to service this morning after removing the plant from service Wednesday to reconnect the plant’s auxiliary transformer.

Prior to yesterday’s planned shutdown the plant had been operating since March 1 after being taken out of service on Feb. 29 to disconnect the transformer for a precautionary repair.

The auxiliary electrical transformer takes electricity from the plant’s main electrical generator and reduces its voltage to power various plant equipment. Unit 3 operated between March 1 and April 10, using a separate source of electrical power for use on site while repairs to the transformer were being made.

Unit 2 is at full power and has been online for 12 continuous days since completing its twentieth refueling outage on April 1.

Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity for homes, businesses and public facilities primarily in New York City and Westchester County.
