Arkansas Nuclear One
Cooper Nuclear Station

Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) operates the largest single unit electrical
generator in the state. Support services are provided by Entergy Nuclear
Nebraska through 2029. CNS, which has performed safely since it was first put
into operation in July of 1974, generates 810 megawatts of electricity. This
would be enough power to supply the Lincoln and Grand Island areas during their
highest summer usage period.
Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) owns and operates CNS; however, it has
contracts to share a portion of the electricity it generates with other
utilities. The remainder of the power is used by NPPD or marketed to other
utilities. Around 20 percent of NPPD's total annual generation comes from CNS.
The facility is named after Humboldt, Neb., natives Guy Cooper, Jr., and Guy
Cooper, Sr., in recognition of their contribution to public power in Nebraska.

Cooper Nuclear Energy Prevents Emissions
Generating electricity with nuclear energy prevents the emission of
pollutants like sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) and greenhouse
gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) associated with burning fossil fuels.
Cooper avoided the emission of 16,605 tons of SO2; 8,610 tons of NOx; and
5.97 million metric tons of CO2 in the year 2009 (Source: NEI/EPA).
Emissions of SO2 lead to the formation of acid rain. NOx is a key precursor
of both ground-level ozone and smog. Greenhouse gases like CO2 contribute to
global warming.

Cooper Nuclear Station Receives License
Renewal
was an opportunity to highlight the Entergy Nuclear business development
team's industry standing in providing licensing services. Entergy worked
with NPPD who coordinated press and media activities. |

Cooper Appreciated
Cooper Nuclear Station received an economic development appreciation award
from the Nemaha County (Nebraska) County Commissioners and the city of
Auburn. |

NPPD makes every effort to help keep the public
informed on electricity and related issues. Part of this effort includes
providing educational materials to schools, service groups, seniors and
others. Some of the items that NPPD can provide include teaching units,
videos, classroom presentations, publications, speaker presentations,
workshops and displays about electrical generation, transmission and
distribution; energy and power; electrical safety; and environmental and
water issues. These items are free to schools that are within the NPPD
service territory. |
